Ships dock at the breezy resort town of Kuşadası, but the reason almost everyone comes is Ephesus — one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean, just inland. Marble streets lead past the towering Library of Celsus and a 25,000-seat theatre, while nearby sit the House of the Virgin Mary and the last column of the Temple of Artemis. Add Turkish carpets and a seaside bazaar and it's a rich, easy day.
Ephesus has almost no shade and a lot of marble — wear a hat and good shoes, and go in the morning. The Terrace Houses (a small extra ticket) are worth it for the intact Roman mosaics and far fewer crowds.
