About St. John's

St. John's, the capital of Antigua, is a colourful, laid-back Caribbean city built around one of the best natural deep-water harbours in the eastern Caribbean -- a harbour so good the British Navy made it their regional HQ at Nelson's Dockyard, still the finest example of a working Georgian naval base in the world and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Antigua's famous '365 beaches -- one for every day of the year' claim is only slight hyperbole: the island's deeply indented coral-limestone coastline produces beach after beach of powdery pale sand and warm turquoise water, with Dickenson Bay and Half Moon Bay among the loveliest in the Caribbean. St. John's itself has a lively market culture, colourful wooden colonial architecture, and the restored Redcliffe Quay waterfront.

Insider Tip

If you're in port on a Sunday, the Shirley Heights Lookout jump-up starts at 4pm and runs to sunset -- live steel pan, barbecue, rum punch, and the most spectacular panoramic light over English Harbour. Ask your taxi driver to take you there before heading back to the ship; the sunset view alone is worth the trip.

Highlights
Nelson's Dockyard National Park
A fully restored Georgian naval dockyard at English Harbour, 18km south of St. John's -- the only continuously working Georgian dockyard in the world, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the hub of the Caribbean sailing scene. The museum, restored Georgian buildings, and the Admiral's Inn bar overlooking the yachts are all worth the taxi trip south.
🏖
Dickenson Bay & Jolly Beach
Dickenson Bay on the northwest coast is the most famous Antiguan beach -- a long crescent of pale sand with calm water and a string of beachfront bars ideal for a relaxed half-day. Jolly Beach on the west coast is one of the longest on the island, with snorkel gear available for rental.
🏛
St. John's Cathedral & City Market
The distinctive twin-towered baroque cathedral (1845, rebuilt after multiple earthquake destructions) dominates the St. John's skyline; the Public Market on Market Street is a real working produce and crafts market -- a completely authentic Caribbean shopping experience away from the duty-free strip.
🤿
Cades Reef Snorkel & Dive
One of Antigua's finest reef systems on the south coast, accessible by day sail or motorboat from St. John's -- a healthy Caribbean coral reef with sea turtles, lobsters, and a variety of reef fish consistently visible in clear water.
🌅
Shirley Heights Lookout
The restored 18th-century British fortification on the headland above Nelson's Dockyard gives the most spectacular views in Antigua -- a 360-degree panorama over English Harbour, the south coast, and across to Montserrat and Guadeloupe. The Sunday evening jump-up (live steel pan, rum punch, and barbecue) is a Caribbean institution.
Local Food & Drink
  • Ducana and saltfish -- the Antiguan national breakfast: grated sweet potato steamed in banana leaf with coconut and spices (ducana), paired with seasoned saltfish and fresh tomatoes; sold at the Public Market and local diners.
  • Pepper pot -- a traditional Caribbean stew of pork, okra, cassava, and local vegetables in a spiced dark broth; found at local restaurants and the market area.
  • Fresh lobster -- Antiguan spiny lobster (in season August 1 through March 31) is plentiful and usually grilled simply with garlic butter at the beach bars; avoid ordering it May through July when it is protected.
  • English Harbour rum -- Antigua Distillery's English Harbour 5-year rum is the island's own label; a rum punch made with it at the Admiral's Inn in Nelson's Dockyard, watching the yachts, is the definitive Antigua experience.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights -- the UNESCO dockyard, a walk through the restored Georgian complex, and the panoramic views from Shirley Heights above.
2 Dickenson Bay beach day -- northwest coast, calm water, beachfront bars, the best swimming beach accessible in a short taxi from the pier.
3 Cades Reef snorkel trip -- day-sail or motorboat to the south coast reef for sea turtles and Caribbean coral.
4 Half Moon Bay -- a remote, wild beach on the east coast protected by Atlantic swell; one of the most beautiful bays in the Eastern Caribbean, accessible by road.
5 Helicopter or catamaran tour of the coastline -- an aerial or sea-level tour of Antigua's astonishing deeply indented 365-beach coast.
